Position preferencing


It isn’t necessarily the case that you want to be top of the Sponsored Links column.  Either:

1.    The top spot could be too expensive, or
2.    You go along with some authorities who argue that you’re likely to attract a better visitor from a few places down as he she, by looking there, is more discerning.

Google does allow you to say what position you would prefer but doesn’t guarantee it will happen.
