The industry jargon for the two or three lines of descriptive text between the blue title line and the green URL in SERPs is "snippet".
Google derives these snippets from a variety of sources and webmasters cannot dictate what is used. But the marketing advantage of a good opportunity for a telling selling message makes it worthwhile to create the circumstances for "guiding" Google to use what you want it to.
