There is a feeling left over from the early days of the web that the macho thing to do was go with as many keywords as possible.   

There are not so many cases where this is actually profitable but it is almost unarguable that this is a mistaken way to use pay-per-click.

If you have just one keyword (not including negative keywords and typos) you can then concentrate on that keyword both in the writing of your ad and the preparation of its landing page.  More than one keyword and you’re straight away into compromise territory.  Preparing an ad and a landing page for each keyword may be a long job but it must pay better than trying to make do with a few ads and landing pages each covering two or more keywords.
